Springdale is a small, settled town of about 2,700 people against the northeast edge of Columbia Metropolitan Airport, roughly 15 minutes from our shop along Platt Springs Road. Puzzled Comfort Solutions repairs, replaces and maintains heating and cooling in town, and a no-heat night in Springdale reaches our 24/7 emergency line. Most homes are 1950s to 1970s brick ranches under oaks with sixty-plus years of growth, and many still run on the ducts and gas furnaces they were built with.

Brick ranches, crawlspace ducts and the Long Branch years

Before it incorporated in 1955, this area was known as Long Branch, and residents voted to become a town partly to avoid being annexed by West Columbia. Growth followed Platt Springs Road and the county airport next door, which served as Columbia Army Air Base during World War II. The housing that went up in those decades is what we work on today. The 2000 census counted 1,334 housing units, while the population was 3,226 in 1990 and 2,744 in 2020. With the head count holding fairly steady, the houses themselves just keep getting older. Census estimates now put roughly 82 percent of Springdale homes in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with the 1960s alone about a third, and count essentially no mobile homes.

Separated metal duct joint under the floor of a brick ranch in Springdale
Joints on older crawlspace ductwork loosen over decades, and conditioned air ends up in the crawlspace instead of the rooms.

In a typical Springdale ranch the ducts run through a crawlspace under the floor. After fifty or sixty years, joints separate, tape and mastic dry out, and insulation falls away, so cooled air leaks into the crawlspace and humid crawlspace air gets pulled back in. Rooms at the far end of the house feel stuffy even when the system runs nonstop. Our ductwork services cover everything from sealing those joints to full replacement.

Gas furnaces original to many Springdale homes need a close look at burners, flue and heat exchanger before each winter.

Heating is the other concern. About 56 percent of households heat with natural gas and most of the rest with electricity, so many homes still have a gas furnace, and older units need careful checks of the burners, flue and heat exchanger. When a furnace has reached the end, furnace installation or a switch to a heat pump are both on the table. When one of those original gas furnaces gives out on a freezing night, that call goes to no-heat emergency repair.

What Springdale houses ask of us most

Springdale's older homes keep bringing us back for the same short list of jobs.

How do we work inside a 1960s ranch without tearing it up?

Older homes need a gentler approach. We start outside at the condenser, where oak leaves and acorns often pack the coil, then move to the furnace or air handler and finally the crawlspace. Every duct joint we can reach gets a look, and we measure airflow at the registers so you can see which rooms are short.

Old thermostat wires pulled through a wall plate before a smart thermostat install in a Springdale ranch
Many older homes have only two to four thermostat wires, which decides what kind of smart thermostat will work.

When an upgrade makes sense, we explain the trade-offs in plain terms: sealing versus replacing ducts, a high-efficiency furnace versus a heat pump, and whether your existing wiring can support a smart thermostat. You decide. Gas work includes a combustion safety check before we leave.

From the airport fence to Platt Springs Road and the Cayce line

Town Hall sits on Platt Springs Road, which also marks Springdale's southern edge on its run toward West Columbia. SC-302 traces the line with Cayce, crossing Sixmile Creek near the I-26 interchange at exit 113. Springdale Elementary is in town, the Lexington 2 Performing Arts Center is here, and older students head to Airport High in Lexington County School District Two. Homes carry the 29170 ZIP. Our usual route in and out is Platt Springs Road itself.

The airport fence line has its own history: the field opened as the county airport, became Columbia Army Air Base in World War II, where Doolittle Raider crews trained in early 1942, and returned to the county in 1947. Springdale also runs its own permit desk. The town's building and work permit application has a Heating and Air box, requires a current SC contractor's license, and asks every subcontractor to hold a Springdale business license, so we file that paperwork with the town before a replacement goes in.

What do Springdale homeowners ask about ducts, furnaces and thermostats?

Should I replace the original ductwork in my Springdale brick ranch?

Not automatically, even though most Springdale ranches were built between 1950 and 1979 and many ducts are original. We go under the house and check every joint, the trunk, the insulation and how much air reaches each room. Sound metal ductwork can often be resealed and reinsulated for far less disruption. If runs are crushed, rusted through or badly undersized for the new equipment, replacing them is the better long-term choice, and we will show you what we found either way.

Can you convert a Springdale gas furnace to a heat pump?

Yes, and with gas heat in more than half of Springdale homes, it is a common question. Options include a full heat pump system that retires the furnace, or a dual-fuel setup where a heat pump handles most of the year and the gas furnace takes over on the coldest nights. We check your electrical panel capacity, duct size and the condition of the existing furnace before recommending one path.

Do you install smart thermostats in older Springdale homes?

We do. The main hurdle in Springdale's mid-century ranches is wiring: many have only two or four thermostat wires and no common wire to power a smart model. We can run a new cable where it is practical, add an adapter at the furnace, or suggest a model that works with the wires you have. We also confirm it is set up correctly for your furnace or heat pump.
