AC installation in Lexington, SC is a decision you live with for the next decade or more, so it should start with your house rather than a brochure. A system that is the wrong size, or set on ductwork that can't carry the air, will short-cycle, leave rooms uneven and struggle with humidity no matter how efficient the label says it is.
We look at the home first, then put two or three options in front of you with their trade-offs: efficiency, comfort, upfront cost and long-term running cost. You choose. Replacement equipment is often sourced and set within a few days of your first call, and the old unit's refrigerant is recovered properly before it comes out.
When replacement beats another repair
Signs that tip the decision toward replacement:
- A failed compressor or leaking coil on a unit past about 12 years. The repair often costs a large share of a new system.
- R-22 in the nameplate. Production ended in 2020, so every recharge comes from shrinking reclaimed supply.
- Rooms that never catch up in July, or a house that feels clammy at 75 degrees, which often means the original sizing was wrong.
- A climbing power bill with no change in how you use the house.
Local patterns add reasons of their own. Subdivisions built while 13 SEER was the federal minimum, roughly 2006 to 2014, are full of original systems near the end of their run. Pollen-clogged coils and long cooling seasons wear condensers faster than in cooler states, and a home-sale inspection that flags an aging unit often brings replacement forward.
Choosing equipment: efficiency, staging and refrigerant
Every new central system now carries a SEER2 rating, the updated efficiency test that replaced SEER in 2023. In South Carolina, a split-system central AC under 45,000 Btu/h has to meet at least 14.3 SEER2. Higher ratings cost more upfront and save more on summer bills; how fast that pays back depends on how hard your house works the system.
Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed
A single-stage unit runs at full output or not at all. It is the simplest and least expensive. Two-stage and variable-speed systems spend most of their time at lower output, which means longer, quieter cycles that dry the indoor air better. In a hot, humid climate that extra drying is often what makes 75 degrees feel comfortable.
AC with a furnace, or a heat pump
If your home heats with gas, a new air conditioner paired with your existing or new furnace is the usual path. If you heat with electricity, a heat pump installation gives you efficient heating and cooling from one outdoor unit. Mild Midlands winters suit heat pumps well, with backup heat strips for the occasional hard freeze.
The refrigerant change
Federal rules under the AIM Act shifted newly made home systems off R-410A starting in 2025. The replacements are A2L refrigerants, mainly R-454B and R-32, with a much lower global-warming impact. Indoor and outdoor sections have to be matched for the same refrigerant, which is one reason replacing only the outdoor half of an older system is often not possible.
How should a new AC be sized for a Lexington house?
Copying the old unit's tonnage is the most common sizing mistake. The house may have new windows, more attic insulation, or a sunroom since that unit went in, and the original may have been oversized to begin with.

A proper load calculation (the industry's Manual J method) adds up heat gain room by room: wall and attic insulation, window area and orientation, air leakage, and the people living there. We pair it with a look at the ductwork, measuring how much air the returns and supply runs can actually move. An oversized unit in our climate cools the air quickly, shuts off, and leaves moisture behind. A correctly sized one runs long enough to dehumidify.
From quote to cold air: what install day looks like
Every install quote from us spells out:
- Load calculation and duct check
- Outdoor unit, matched indoor coil or air handler, and line set (reused or new)
- Electrical disconnect, wiring and any circuit changes
- Condensate drain, trap and float switch
- Permit, refrigerant recovery and removal of the old equipment
- Startup testing, thermostat setup and cleanup
Step 1: Before the crew arrives
Once you pick an option, we order the equipment and pull the mechanical permit from the town or county building department. We call ahead on install day.
Step 2: Removing the old system
Refrigerant is recovered from the old equipment into a cylinder, as EPA Section 608 requires, before anything is cut loose.

Step 3: Setting the new equipment
The outdoor unit goes on a level pad, the indoor coil or air handler is set and sealed to the ductwork, and the line set is either flushed and reused or replaced. Attic units get a secondary drain pan with a float switch.

Step 4: Brazing, testing and evacuation
Copper joints are brazed with nitrogen flowing to keep the inside clean, then the system is pressure-tested for leaks and pulled into a deep vacuum, confirmed on a micron gauge, to remove air and moisture.

Step 5: Startup and walk-through
We release and adjust the charge to the manufacturer's specification, check airflow and the temperature drop across the coil, show you the thermostat and filter, and clean up.
What changes the price of a new system
No two houses match, so no two quotes do. The main factors:
- System capacity (tonnage) and SEER2 efficiency
- Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed equipment
- AC with a furnace versus a heat pump
- Whether the indoor coil, air handler and line set are replaced
- Duct repairs, return upgrades or new runs
- Electrical work such as a new disconnect or circuit
- Attic or crawlspace access, and the permit
For 2026 installs, there is no federal 25C energy tax credit; it ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check current Dominion Energy SC programs if any are offered, look for manufacturer rebates, and talk to a tax professional. Financing for HVAC projects is available if you would rather spread the cost out.
Permits, licences and warranty registration
Three pieces of paperwork protect a new system. First, the mechanical permit: a condenser or air handler replacement in Lexington County normally needs one from the town or county building office, and the inspection checks the work against the International Mechanical Code as South Carolina adopted it. Second, refrigerant: EPA Section 608 requires the old charge to be recovered, never vented. Third, licensing: South Carolina's LLR licenses HVAC contractors, and its online lookup shows any installer's status before you sign. We are fully licensed and insured, and the permit cost is a line on the estimate.
New equipment comes with the manufacturer's parts warranty, and many manufacturers only honor the longer term if the owner registers the equipment online soon after it goes in; the deadline varies by brand.
For the first summer, change the filter on schedule, keep plants and pine straw away from the outdoor unit, and book a spring tune-up next year so the warranty paperwork shows the system has been maintained.
What you get from a Bryant dealer that answers its own phone
As a Bryant-authorized dealer, we install Bryant equipment most often and know its matched coils, air handlers and registration steps well. Want another make? Just ask. The estimate is free and itemized, not one lump number. Reviewers often mention equipment found and installed within days when others quoted weeks. Financing is available, and published discounts apply: health care workers, law enforcement, first responders and veterans save 15%, public school staff 10%, and households with a special-needs family member 20%.

What do homeowners ask before replacing their AC?
How much does a new AC system cost in Lexington, SC?
The total depends on the size of the system, its efficiency and staging, whether you are replacing just the outdoor unit or the indoor coil and air handler too, the condition of the line set and ducts, electrical work and the permit. A heat pump and an AC with a gas furnace also price differently. After a visit to the house you get a written breakdown of each option.
How do you size a new AC for my home?
We work from a load calculation, not from the tonnage of the old unit. It accounts for square footage, insulation in the attic and walls, window area and which way the windows face, air leakage and the number of people in the house. We also check the ductwork, because a correctly sized unit on undersized returns still won't perform. In this humid climate an oversized system cools fast but leaves the air clammy.
How quickly can you install a replacement AC?
In many cases the new system is on site and running a few days after you first call, depending on the size and model and what the supply houses have in stock. A straightforward change-out usually takes a day on site. Jobs that add ductwork changes, move the equipment or include electrical upgrades take longer, and you will know the expected schedule before you sign off on the job.
Do you haul away the old equipment?
Removing the old outdoor unit and any indoor equipment being replaced is part of the replacement job. Before anything is disconnected, the refrigerant inside is recovered into a cylinder as EPA rules require, rather than vented. Ask us to note removal and disposal on your quote so it is in writing, and the crew cleans up the work area before leaving.
Is financing available for a new AC?
Yes, financing is available for new systems and larger projects such as ductwork replacement. Rates, terms and approval come from the lender and depend on your application, so we don't quote them in advance. Ask about it at your estimate and we will walk you through applying. It is also worth asking about any current discounts and checking manufacturer and utility rebates.
