Irmo calls itself the Gateway to Lake Murray and Home of the Okra Strut, and it is roughly a 15-minute run from our Lexington shop, straight over the Lake Murray dam. We work on both sides of the Lexington and Richland county line, and emergency calls from Irmo households get answered day and night. Many of the town's 1970s to 1990s homes now run heat pumps old enough that a planned upgrade beats waiting for a July breakdown.
Heat pumps near the Lake Murray dam that are due for an upgrade
Census Bureau estimates for 2020–2024 place about 63 percent of Irmo's homes in the 1970s and 1980s, and roughly 81 percent of households heat with electricity. Plenty of Irmo subdivisions from this era went in with first-generation heat pumps handling both heating and cooling. Those original units are long gone, but many second-round replacements installed in the 1990s and 2000s are still running. Equipment from before 2010 typically uses R-22 refrigerant, which has not been produced in the US since 2020, so recharging a leak is costly and only delays the inevitable.
Newer systems are different in ways that matter here. Since 2023, split-system heat pumps sold in the Southeast must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, and since 2025 new residential systems have moved to lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. Variable-speed models go further, running at low speed for long stretches to pull humidity out of the air near the lake.
The ductwork is the other half of the story. Seams and joints that have been in place for 30 to 50 years leak, and a new system connected to leaky ducts never delivers its rated performance. That is why duct sealing is often part of an Irmo upgrade. Keep in mind that the federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after 2025; check utility and manufacturer rebates and ask a tax professional.

What do Irmo homes need from a heating and air contractor?
Aging heat pumps, older ducts and long lake-country summers shape most of the work we do in Irmo.

Heat Pump Installation in Irmo
About 63 percent of Irmo homes date from the 1970s and 1980s, and the heat pumps put in them during the 1990s and 2000s often run on R-22 and are well past a normal service life.

AC Repair in Irmo
Long, humid summers near Lake Murray push older Irmo equipment hard, and weak capacitors, failing fan motors and leaks in R-22 systems show up first once the July heat settles in.

Duct Sealing & Testing in Irmo
Duct seams in Irmo subdivisions from the 1970s and 1980s have been leaking for decades, and sealing them first lets a new variable-speed heat pump deliver the comfort it is rated for.

Spring and fall visits keep an aging Irmo heat pump running, track how much life it has left and let you schedule a replacement for a mild month instead of reacting to a July failure.

AC Installation & Replacement in Irmo
When a split-system AC fails in July, Irmo homeowners want a clear replacement timeline and a permit plan, which depends on whether the address sits on the Lexington or Richland County side.

Replacing a heat pump in Irmo: survey, install day and permit
A replacement starts with a visit to the house, not a quote over the phone. We look at the existing equipment, measure the rooms and windows to size the new system, test the ducts and check the electrical service. Then you get options, usually a standard single-stage unit alongside a two-stage or variable-speed choice, with the pros and cons of each and no pressure to pick the most expensive one.
Once you decide, heat pump installation moves quickly: equipment can often be on hand within a few days, and most installs take one working day. The permit comes from whichever building office covers your address, since Irmo spans two counties. After startup, we check refrigerant charge, airflow and the thermostat, and we clean up before leaving. If you need cooling in the meantime, AC repair can often keep an old system going until the new one is in.

Lake Murray Boulevard, Dreher Shoals Road and two counties
Irmo was chartered on Christmas Eve 1890 after the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad opened, and its name blends those of two founders, C.J. Iredell and Henry Moseley. Today it covers about 6.86 square miles and counted 11,569 residents in 2020. The Okra Strut, started in 1973 to raise money for a library, is still held every year.
Lake Murray Boulevard (SC-60) is the main artery, meeting I-26 at Exit 102 and SC-6 near the lake. In Irmo, SC-6 changes from North Lake Drive to Dreher Shoals Road, named for the dam most people call the Lake Murray Dam. Saluda Shoals Park, a 480-acre park on the Saluda River below the dam, opened its new 8.5-mile riverwalk trail in 2026. Students attend Lexington-Richland School District 5 schools such as Irmo High and Dutch Fork High.

From Irmo, take Lake Murray Boulevard (SC-60) to SC-6, then follow SC-6 south across the Lake Murray dam and into downtown Lexington, about 10 miles.

Do you serve Irmo homes on both the Lexington and Richland county sides?
Yes. Irmo sits in both Lexington and Richland counties, and we work on either side of the line. The county only changes paperwork: for a replacement, the permit comes from the building office that covers your address, and we confirm which one before the install is scheduled. Service calls, repairs and maintenance visits work the same on both sides.
Is a variable-speed heat pump worth it for an older Irmo home?
It can be. A variable-speed heat pump runs long and slow most of the time, which pulls more moisture out of humid summer air and keeps temperatures steadier. It costs more up front, and it only performs well if the ducts are sealed and sized properly. In Irmo, where most houses date from the 1970s and 1980s, we check the duct system first. We will show you the trade-offs against a single-stage or two-stage unit.
How long does an AC replacement take in Irmo?
Most straightforward replacements are a single working day once the equipment is on hand. The bigger variable is getting the right unit, and we can often source it within a few days of the first visit. Jobs that add duct changes, a new pad or electrical upgrades, common in Irmo homes from the 1970s and 1980s, can take longer. We tell you the expected timeline before you sign off on anything.
Do you offer maintenance plans in Irmo?
Yes. Plan members are seen twice a year, once in spring for cooling and once in fall for heating, and they get priority on the schedule and member pricing on repairs. The phone team can walk you through current details. For an older Irmo system, those visits also give us a clear picture of how much life the equipment has left, which makes replacement planning easier.

“Puzzled Comfort solutions came recommended by a family member a few years ago and Chong is now our go-to person for anything HVAC and electrical related. He has saved us several times during emergency situations. Not only is Chong knowledgeable, he is trustworthy, professional, fair and efficient. During the heat of Summer, Chong came for emergency services when my HVAC went out while my nephew who was an infant was staying at my home. He fixed our issue quickly and had things up and running in no time. Recently, on Labor Day, while out of town we had a leak from our light fixture coming from the HVAC/roof. This could have easily turned into an electrical fire/problem and put my pets and house sitter at risk. Chong came out and fixed the issue within an hour and made sure our home was safe until he could get out there. I highly recommend using him for any of his services and we will now be on schedule for a bi-annual checkup to prevent further issues from happening. I have referred Chong to several friends and businesses who have felt the same about his great work. Thank you again!”
